My Journey with LoveWorks – Australian School of Tantra
Before we dive into the depths of Tantra and Taoism, I’d like to share a personal note. I recently completed the LoveWorks Tantra Teacher training program at the Australian School of Tantra, and it has been a truly transformative experience. Not only for the expansion of my offerings which I now get to bring to my community and beyond but for the World and larger community in general.
The Australian School of Tantra was founded, and still run this day by Diane Riley – a woman, a goddess, a powerhouse who is so deeply embodied in herself and in her work. She is a gift to the world of sexuality and I am humbled and grateful to to continue the lineage and body of work she has created.
LoveWorks beautifully integrates traditional wisdom with modern practices, offering a holistic approach to love, sexuality, intimacy. Throughout this article, I’ll be sharing insights from both ancient traditions and my recent LoveWorks training, showing how they complement and enhance each other in support of enhancing modern relationships.
The Ancient Roots of Sexual Wisdom
For millennia, Tantra and Taoism have been invaluable sources of wisdom regarding human sexuality and spiritual growth. These ancient traditions offer profound insights into the intricate connections between our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves, providing a holistic approach to the human experience and evolution.
The Essence of Tantra
Tantra, with its roots in India, presents a unique perspective on harnessing sexual energy for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Among ancient Tantric practitioners, there existed a deep understanding of the connection between matter and spirit (akin to modern quantum physics) and the intricate relationship between body and mind. This knowledge predates modern scientific revelations by centuries, if not millennia.
Tantric practitioners recognised that their practices could profoundly alter the state of our nervous system and brain, fundamentally changing the way our thoughts and responses occur.
Tantra offers a pathway for:
- Personal spiritual growth
- Expanding consciousness
- Releasing conditioned patterns that keep us contracted
- Liberating the body
- Deep connection to the heart
It’s important to note that Tantra is not solely focused on personal spiritual growth. While individual development is a significant aspect of the Tantric path, it also offers a profound pathway for deepening a connection to a partner or beloved.
The Wisdom of Taoism
Taoism, originating in China, complements Tantric teachings with its focus on balance and harmony. In Taoist philosophy, everything in life is about balance and harmony, which includes the management of qi (life force energy). Sexual energy, called jing in Taoist practice, is seen as one of the most powerful forms of energy available to humans. Managing this energy wisely is considered essential for health, longevity, and spiritual development.
The Historical Context of Tantra
Some believe the roots of Tantra can be traced back to ancient shamanic and matriarchal societies. In these early cultures, there was a deep reverence for all of nature, and the feminine was seen as powerful and often superior. This foundation in nature-based spirituality has continued to influence Tantric practices throughout its evolution.
From these ancient origins, Tantra has evolved and adapted to various cultural contexts over the centuries. Its journey through time and across cultures has led to a rich tapestry of practices and beliefs, each adding new dimensions to the core principles.
Key Principles of Traditional Tantra
While often misrepresented in modern Western culture as being purely about sexual technique, the Tantric system has much deeper meanings. At its core, Tantra is focused on the profound connection between body, mind, and spirit, offering an embodied path to spiritual liberation. This holistic view sets Tantra apart from more compartmentalized approaches to spirituality and sexuality.
The Unity of All Existence (Non-Duality)
Tantra teaches us that all of existence is fundamentally interconnected. This principle transcends the separation of matter and energy, self and other. In Tantric philosophy, the universe is seen as a unified whole.
This concept of non-duality has profound implications for how we view ourselves and our relationships with others. When we recognize the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, it transforms our understanding of our place in the world and our relationships with others.
In practice, this principle is embodied through various techniques that help practitioners experience this unity directly. The body is viewed as a sacred vessel through which the divine can manifest. By honoring the body in practice and ritual, practitioners can cultivate a deeper awareness of this interconnectedness, leading to a more profound sense of unity with all of existence.
Sacred Sexuality
In Tantric tradition, sexuality is seen as more than just a physical act but as a sacred and transformative experience. Sexual union is seen as an opportunity for profound emotional and spiritual connection, offering a path to higher states of consciousness.
This perspective on sexuality stands in stark contrast to many societal views that often reduce sex to a purely physical or procreative function. In Tantra, sexual energy is recognized as a powerful creative force that can be cultivated and channeled for personal and spiritual growth.
When sexual energy is understood and used as the creative, nourishing, life-force energy that it is, it expands our understanding of sexuality. This expanded view of sexuality encompasses emotional, energetic, and spiritual dimensions, offering a more holistic and fulfilling approach to intimate relationships.
Working with the Body’s Subtle Energy System
Tantra recognises and works with the body’s subtle energy system:
Sexual Energy (Life-force creation energy): In Tantric philosophy, sexual energy is seen as synonymous with life itself. It is the energy that not only brings forth and creates life but also sustains it. It’s understood as a fundamental life force that permeates all aspects of existence.
The 7 Chakras: Tantra works with the concept of chakras, which are understood as energy centers within the body that resonate and communicate with universal energies. Each chakra is associated with specific physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our being. By working with these energy centers, practitioners aim to balance and harmonize their entire being.
Kundalini Shakti Energy: This is understood as the dynamic, creative energy of the divine feminine. In Tantric tradition, this energy is often represented as a coiled serpent sitting at the base of the spine. The awakening and rise of this energy through the chakras is said to lead to spiritual liberation.
“Shakti is also the great initiatress, unlocking the hidden mysteries in the heart of those to whom she is connected.”
Practices for Deepening Connection
Both Tantra and Taoism offer a rich array of practices designed to deepen our connection with ourselves, our partners, and the universe at large.
Meditation, Mindfulness, Breathwork & Ritual Practices
Tantric practices and rituals are designed to lead practitioners into the hidden places of their deepest longings, truest selves, and connection to the source of love. These practices aim to dissolve the illusion of separateness, allowing individuals to embrace all aspects of life and all aspects of themselves, including their whole, erotic, primal selves.
Meditation, mindfulness, and breathwork serve as essential tools and gateways for channeling energy. These practices help individuals develop greater awareness of their bodies, emotions, and energetic states. They also serve as powerful tools for connecting with partners on a deeper level.
Specific practices might include:
- Guided meditations focusing on energy awareness and circulation
- Mindfulness exercises to enhance presence and body awareness
- Breathwork techniques to activate and move energy through the body
- Rituals designed to honour the body and celebrate sacred sexuality
The Power of Presence
The concept of presence is fundamental to Tantric practice. Being fully present in one’s body and engaged in each moment allows practitioners to experience life more vividly and with greater awareness. This state of presence is cultivated through various techniques and is considered essential for deepening intimacy and connection.
When both partners in a relationship cultivate presence, their attention becomes fully focused on each other, creating a sense of attunement and resonance. This deep presence allows for greater vulnerability, as both partners feel safe and fully seen by one another.
In Tantric practice, presence means that both partners can listen and respond to the subtle energies and needs of each other’s body, without rushing through the experience. This opens the door to heart-to-heart connection, a state in which emotional intimacy is cultivated alongside physical pleasure.
The practice of presence in Tantra extends beyond intimate relationships. It’s a way of engaging with all aspects of life more fully, leading to a richer, more vibrant experience of existence.
Cultivating Heart Connection
The concept of heart connection is a central pillar in Tantra, especially in practices that foster deeper intimacy between partners. It involves opening and connecting to the heart with love, which allows individuals to experience profound emotional intimacy. This connection transcends the physical aspects of a relationship, linking both partners at a spiritual and emotional level.
Through the heart, we are able to connect intimately not only with others but also with ourselves. This self-connection is seen as essential for authentic relating and deep intimacy with others.
By focusing on heart connection, Tantric practices aim to create relationships characterised by deep emotional intimacy, mutual understanding, and spiritual connection.
Heart connection practices in Tantra might include:
- Heart-centered meditations
- Partner exercises focusing on eye contact and synchronised breathing
- Rituals designed to honour and appreciate one’s partner
- Practices to cultivate self-love and acceptance
Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Practice
The LoveWorks program beautifully integrates traditional Tantric and Taoist principles with modern understanding. One of the most significant overlaps between traditional Tantra and LoveWorks is the shared concept of sacred sexuality.
In both traditional Tantra and LoveWorks, practices involving sacred sexuality focus on awakening and moving energy between partners. This energy work is aimed at increasing deeper connection and intimacy in lovemaking, as well as fostering a shared connection to the divine and a higher state of consciousness.
LoveWorks incorporates many practices rooted in traditional Tantric wisdom, including:
- Mindful touch: Encouraging partners to be fully present and intentional in their physical interactions
- Eye-gazing: A practice that fosters deep connection and intimacy through sustained eye contact
- Synchronised breathing: Techniques that help partners attune to each other’s energy and physical states
- U-shape Breathing: A specific breathing technique that enhances energy circulation between partners
- Sensual communication: Practices that improve verbal and non-verbal communication during intimate moments
- Lingam and yoni massage: Sacred massage techniques that honour the genitals as gateways to spiritual experiences
These practices are designed to build strong energetic and emotional bonds between partners. By encouraging individuals to slow down and be fully present, these techniques allow the sexual experience to transcend physical pleasure and become a path for personal and relational transformation.
The LoveWorks heart-based model mirrors the traditional Tantric view of sexuality as sacred, transformative, and expansive. This approach cultivates a deeper, more intimate connection to both self and other, aligning closely with the goals of traditional Tantric practice.
The Science Behind the Magic
Modern research is beginning to validate what these ancient traditions have long known. Tantric and Taoist practices have measurable effects on our physiology and neurobiology:
Nervous System Regulation
Practices such as controlled breathing, mindful touch, and meditation have been shown to regulate the nervous system, promoting relaxation and well-being. These techniques can help shift the body from a state of stress (sympathetic nervous system activation) to a state of relaxation and openness (parasympathetic nervous system activation).
The vagus nerve, a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system, plays a critical role in both stress reduction and emotional regulation. When engaged through deep breathing or meditation, the vagus nerve helps to lower the heart rate and promote calmness. Practices of slow, deep breathing and mindful touch stimulate this nerve, creating a sense of relaxation and openness that facilitates intimacy.
These techniques help couples move from states of stress or disconnection into deeper emotional and physical intimacy. By learning to regulate their nervous systems, individuals can create a physiological state that is more conducive to connection and intimacy.
Hormonal Effects
Research has shown that practices involving deep breathing and touch can stimulate the release of oxytocin, often called the “love hormone” because of its role in promoting bonding and trust. Oxytocin is released during intimate touch and orgasm, enhancing feelings of closeness and security between partners.
Other hormones affected by these practices include:
- Cortisol: Stress hormone levels are often reduced through relaxation and meditation practices
- Dopamine: The “reward” neurotransmitter, which can be stimulated through pleasurable touch and connection
- Serotonin: Often called the “happiness” neurotransmitter, levels can be increased through practices that promote well-being and connection
The hormonal changes induced by these practices can have profound effects on mood, connection, and overall well-being, contributing to the effectiveness of these practices.
Neuroplasticity and Mindfulness
Many of the practices taught in LoveWorks and traditional Tantra involve mindfulness and focused attention. These techniques have been shown to promote neuroplasticity – the brain’s ability to form new neural connections and adapt.
By consistently practicing mindfulness and presence, individuals can literally reshape their brains, potentially improving emotional regulation, empathy, and connection. This neurobiological change can lead to lasting improvements in relationship dynamics and personal well-being.
Taoist Sexual Practices
The works of authors like Dr. Stephen Chang in “The Tao of Sex” and Jolan Chang in “The Tao of Love and Sex” highlight how Taoist practices seek to balance sexual energy to improve overall well-being. Some key Taoist sexual practices include:
- Energy Conservation: Techniques for conserving sexual energy through non-ejaculatory orgasms for men and multi-orgasmic states for women. These practices are designed to retain and circulate jing energy within the body.
- Energy Circulation: Methods for moving sexual energy throughout the body, often visualised as circulating through specific pathways or energy centres.
- Breathing Techniques: Specialised breathing practices that help move and balance energy in the body.
- Meditation and Visualisation: Practices that help practitioners connect with and direct their sexual energy.
Positive Outcomes for Individuals and Couples
The integration of traditional Tantric principles into modern practices like LoveWorks has demonstrated numerous positive outcomes for both individuals and couples:
- Enhanced Connection: These practices help couples connect not only physically but emotionally and energetically. This multidimensional connection can lead to more fulfilling and sustainable relationships.
- Healing Relational Challenges: Couples struggling with trust issues, desire discrepancies, or other relational challenges are taught how to rebuild emotional and sexual connection through mindful intimacy practices. These techniques can help heal past wounds and create a stronger foundation for the relationship.
- Improved Communication: Conscious communication practices build emotional intimacy and help prevent misunderstandings, fostering a stronger, more connected relationship. Partners learn to express their needs, desires, and boundaries more clearly and compassionately.
- Increased Intimacy: By focusing on presence and heart connection, these practices can significantly deepen the level of intimacy experienced by couples, both in and out of the bedroom.
- Personal Growth: While many of these practices are done with a partner, they also foster individual growth and self-awareness, as well as increased self-confidence, body acceptance, and emotional resilience.
- Stress Reduction: Many of the breathing and meditation practices taught in LoveWorks and traditional Tantra have been shown to reduce stress and promote overall well-being.
- Enhanced Sexual Experiences: By approaching sexuality as a sacred and mindful practice, couples can experience more fulfilling and pleasurable sexual experiences.
